Jersey Teen Raises Funds For Animals. The Paws and Claws Society
donated $5,000 to Beacon Animal Rescue at the "Dog Day Afternoon" fund raiser at
Bonefish Grill in Egg Harbor Township in August.
See the pressofAtlanticCity story.
See the Shore News Today story.
The "About Us" page on the web site of
Beacon Animal
Rescue in Ocean View, NJ, explains that they are a no-kill "non-profit
organization dedicated to rescuing domestic animals that are about to be
euthanized in shelters, giving them the care they need, and finding homes for
them". Francesca Lanfranchi, 15, has volunteered for the organization
since she was 8 years old. To date, her fundraisers have raised over
$40,000 for Beacon.
Lanfranchi's first fundraiser for Beacon,
Strut For Mutts, was first held in 2005 and became an annual event where
dogs and their people can spend an afternoon together having fun while
supporting local homeless pets. This year, Lanfranchi decided to try
something different, hosting her "Dog Day Afternoon" event indoors.
"With the fundraiser inside,"
The Shore News Today quotes, "it's better to not have to worry about the
weather. Bonefish Grill is opening up just for me."
Francesca's
efforts have been noticed! In February of 2010, she was named one of
New Jersey's top two Youth Volunteers by
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. She is shown in the photo
at right being
congratulated by Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
In 2006, she was mentioned by Congressman Frank
LoBiondo in a
philly.com article on Candidates' Views. LoBiondo is quoted as saying,
"There are many aspects of our country that make me feel good, but there is one
definitive characteristic that encourages me the most: the unwavering American
spirit. That spirit was demonstrated in the nation's response to Sept. 11, and
again after the deadly tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast.
Each time, Americans rallied to aid those in need. The American spirit is also
present daily in communities across the United States and here in South Jersey.
From spaghetti dinners hosted at our fire departments to residents like
10-year-old Francesca Lanfranchi of Egg Harbor Township - who organized a
charity walk for her local animal shelter - I firmly believe that when each
individual contributes to making our communities better, it makes our nation
that much better."

Grant applications for funding now being
accepted. Paws and Claws Society is now accepting
Circle of
Compassion for Animals grant applications to fund no-kill programs and services.

The 2011 No Kill Conference in Washington, DC
was a sold-out success! From Nathan Winograd's blog: "No Kill Conference
2011 brought hundreds of animal lovers from 40 states and nine countries to the
George Washington School of Law in Washington D.C. The most successful shelter
directors, animal lawyers, and shelter reformers nationwide shared insights and
strategies to end the systematic killing of animals in our nations pounds and
shelters. The attendees heard from directors of open admission shelters with
save rates of better than 97%. They heard from lawyers who have passed laws
making it illegal for shelters to kill animals in a wide variety of contexts and
who have successfully saved the lives of animals who shelters were determined to
kill. And they heard from reformers who have succeeded in passing laws to end
the needless killing of animals in their community."

During this time of economic uncertainty,
families especially need the comfort of their pets. To have to take the
heart-wrenching step of giving up your beloved pet to an already overflowing

2010

Paws and Claws Society is seeking the fresh ideas of young
people for an old problem - how to get more animals adopted from animal
shelters.
AWARDS: A 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize may be awarded in
each participating county for $1,000, $750 and $500 respectively. The student
submitting the best idea from all the entrants may be awarded $1,500.

practical way to increase the adoption of shelter pets and describe it in an
essay of less than 500 words. Idea(s) can apply to an entire shelter or to
specific types of adoptions like senior pets, special needs pets, feral cats or
big dogs. You can submit up to five original ideas, if each is a separate
submission.
JUDGING: A four person committee chaired by the Paws
and Claws Society Treasurer will judge the submissions. Decisions will be final.
Paws and Claws Society reserves the right not to award all prizes, if entries
are not original. If a same or similar winning idea is submitted, the earliest
postmark will decide the winner.

signifying that their work is original. While the students will retain rights to
their work, Paws and Claws Society reserves the right to use all ideas without
compensation.

International Society for
Animal Rights (ISAR) Offers thanks and recognition to PACS for idea to convert
and use their billboard in a print ad in Mother Jones:
Mother
Jones Meets An ISAR Billboard
One of ISAR’s major tools in our international effort
to educate about the moral and other necessity of spay/neuter of
companion animals is our
billboard campaign.
The campaign has been a very
effective means of drawing attention to dog and cat overpopulation,
and the importance of spaying and neutering. As a result of our last
campaign, in multiple states throughout the United States public
awareness of this important animal rights issue has been heightened.
In the February issue of Mother Jones magazine, our friends at Paws
& Claws Society, Inc. and New Jersey Animal Advocates have come up
with a fabulous new idea: getting our huge highway billboards into
print media. The folks at Paws & Claws and New Jersey Animal
Advocates have turned our billboard into the following paid
half-page print advertisement.

Cat Camp
Foundation thanks Paws And Claws in their
December 2009 Cat Tales
Newsletter, for food and spay/neuter assistance:
|
"There are some people who have really helped us with this issue. I
didn’t have the money for food and didn’t know what to do. Jean
Smith, who heads the Paws and Claws group, once again came to my
rescue. She met with me at PetSmart and donated a carload of food to
us. It was like Christmas in November. Jean has also taken care of
our spay/neuter program. She funds our medical bills and Willingboro
Veterinary Clinic is working with us to get the job done. This is
not the first time Jean has come to my rescue. She is always there
when we really need help. To say “thank you, Jean” seems inadequate,
but it comes from the heart." |

CALENDAR YEAR 2009 BEGAN WITH WONDERFUL WORDS FROM OUR FURRY ANGELS:
My mom has been telling me about all the wonderful things
you are doing to help me. There are not enough meows in the entire world to let
you know how much this means to me and my mom. I worry about my mom just as much
as she worries about me. She has been so upset trying to find a way to make me
better. No one wanted me when I was at the shelter. I was old and tired and
skinny and really not so pretty to look at. But, my mom saw the beauty in me and
told me once she held me and I wrapped my paws around her neck she knew at once
I was going home with her. I remember when she put me in her car to take me home
on that first day of my new life, she whispered to me that she would give me the
best life she could give me for the rest of my days. If my meows could be turned
into words, I could make her feel better and let her know that she is doing just
that. My mom is having it rough right now but she is doing all she can to help
me first and with you as my friend also, I know I will get better. Your right,
Dr. John is very handsome and was gentle and kind to me. Gotta' Go, my mom is
going into the kitchen and it is my job to meow for more food.
Love and Meows,
Tigger

Claws Society. The students did an excellent job. The house is strong and sturdy

CMC ANIMAL SHELTER NEW SINK & COUNTERTOPS
Thank you from Cape May Animal Shelter for PACS donation of a new sink and

Hi, Madelyn. It's wonderful, amazing, beautiful, efficient, clean, sparkling ...

It must have occurred yesterday, as they weren't there when I left Wednesday,
but were there today. Fabulous! Please pass my thanks along to the generous

CAT SPAY DAY IS A BIG SUCCESS.
February 24, 2009, Paws
and Claws sponsored its 15th Annual "CAT SPAY DAY". In recognition of the
importance of spay/neuter, Pennsville Township Mayor and Committee declared
February 24 as Cat Spay Day in Pennsville Township. Coupons redeemable for free
cat spay/neuter surgery by participating veterinarians were made available to
qualifying Pennsville residents at the Pennsville Pound.
PENNSVILLE POUND PURRFECT PETS was developed and implemented by PACS
and has successfully transitioned the Pound into a no-kill facility serving four
townships in Salem County. Every animal picked up by Animal Control Officers in
the four townships received loving care and medical treatment to make them whole
again. Abandoned animals were spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for internal
and external parasites, bathed, groomed and socialized while housed at the
Pound. When ready, they were either adopted directly by the Animal Adoption
Coordinator provided by Paws and Claws or were transported to one of PACS
"Circle of Compassion for Animals" partners where they were housed in foster
care and placed with their forever families.
GIVE A LITTLE BOWL OF LOVE
2009 was a year of great
economic uncertainty for many families and their beloved pets. Paws and Claws
Society is committed to helping people keep their pets. The need was urgent and
PACS met that need with the purchase of more than $9,000 in pet food. PACS
commitment to this life saving endeavor insured that struggling families would
not be forced to surrender their animals to already overflowing animal shelters.
